Renal failure is rapid deterioration of kidney function resulting in accumulation of nitrogenous waste products of protein metabolism. There is sudden shut down of renal function following metabolic insult or traumatic injury of normal kidneys.

The urine output may be as less as 20-200ml/dy. Serum urea nitrogen and creatinine levels are increased.

Principle of diet:

high calorie diet

A high calorie, low protein, moderate fats, restricted sodium and potassium diet is prescribed.

  • When vomitings and diarrhoea are seen avoid oral intake of food instead intravenous glucose should be administrated.
  • Fruits and vegetables should be leached and given as they contain potassium.
  • Sodium is restricted in the diet so table should be restricted as much as possible.
  • Coconut water should be avoided as it contains high amounts of potassium.

Foods to be included for Renal Failure Diet :

Rice, idli, sago, upma, barley water, Ragi malt, porridges, rasam, gruels, and soft foods, vegetables like bottle guard, potato, ridge guard, salads, can be included. Fruits and vegetables should be leached and given.
