Often, people are unaware that they have diabetes as the early symptoms of diabetes are easy to miss and do not cause any harm.  Diabetes is known as a silent killer because of this.Individuals with personal or family history of diabetes are at an increased risk.  They must always be on the lookout for the early signs of diabetes.

Most common early symptoms of diabetes

Early Symptoms of Diabetes

Some of the most common early symptoms of diabetes are as follows:

  • Polyuria or frequent and excessive urination:  It is one of the classic and earliest signs of both type 1 and types 2 diabetes. A constant need to pass urine especially during the night (nocturia) is concerning and should be discussed with the doctor.

One of the noticeable signs of diabetes is polydipsia or feeling thirsty frequently. The high blood sugar levels are the reason for feeling extremely thirsty.

  • Diabetics usually feel more hungry and end up eating more.  The body is unable to regulate the glucose that the cells use for energy.
  • Wound healing is slow in a diabetic compared to a nondiabetic. A rise in blood sugar levels directly impacts the functions of the red blood cells carrying the nutrients to the tissues, which slows the healing of wounds.
  • Diabetics suffer from frequent infection and recurring of infections. The increase in the blood sugar levels makes an individual highly sensitive to different kinds of infection. The skin and the urinary tract are the most common sites of infection in diabetic patients.
  • One of the risk factors for diabetes is obesity and a sign of the disease is weight loss.Unexplained weight loss is considered as very unhealthy and needs to be evaluated.
  • A common diabetes symptom that interferes with activities of daily living is fatigue and weakness. The body is unable to respond appropriately to the insulin due to increase in blood sugar levels.
  • An early warning sign of diabetes is numbness and tingling in the upper and lower extremities (legs, hand, fingers, feet).  If this is not taken care of, it leads to peripheral arterial disease due to poor circulation and diabetic peripheral neuropathy caused due to nerve damage.
